Simple resume builder

A resume builder that doesn't get in your way.

No AI assistant. No carousel of paid templates. No "complete your profile to continue." Free Resume Builder is a simple resume builder that does one thing well — turns your text into a clean, recruiter-friendly PDF in under five minutes.

What "simple" means here

Most resume builders are bloated because every feature is a potential upsell. AI assistant — premium. Cover letter — premium. LinkedIn import — premium. ATS check — premium. The interface becomes a maze designed to push you toward checkout.

Free Resume Builder is the opposite. We have no premium tier, so we have no incentive to add complexity. The builder is a single screen: editor on the left, live preview on the right, download button in the top corner. That's it.

Three templates designed for simple resumes

  • Vellum — Single column. Conservative typography. The most universal "I want a clean resume" template we have. If you can't decide, pick this.
  • Ledger — Slightly tighter spacing than Vellum. Good when you have a lot of content to fit on one page.
  • Compass — Almost identical structure with a subtle accent line at the top. Use when you want clean but not boring.

All three are in the gallery. Click any to start editing.

What we deliberately don't have

FeatureWhy we skip it
AI bullet generatorGeneric, formulaic, recruiters can spot the rhythm. Write your own.
Onboarding wizardYou came to make a resume, not answer 12 questions about your career goals.
"Resume score" gaugeVanity metric. Real feedback comes from interviews and rejections.
LinkedIn importLinkedIn data is bloated and reads weirdly when imported. Faster to type.
Email signup before accessYou're here to make a resume, not be marketed at.

How long does it actually take?

We tested with five people who'd never used the builder before. Median time from arriving on the homepage to downloading a finished, recruiter-ready PDF: 4 minutes 12 seconds. Slowest: 7 minutes (a senior with 8 jobs to enter). Fastest: 2 minutes 50 seconds (a fresher with one internship).

The simplicity rule: if a feature requires a tooltip to explain, we don't add it. If a section makes the first-time user pause for more than three seconds, we redesign it. The goal isn't to ship a 'powerful' tool — it's to ship one that gets out of your way.

The 5-minute simple resume process

  1. Pick Vellum. 15 seconds.
  2. Type contact details — name, phone, email, location, LinkedIn. 30 seconds.
  3. Skip the summary if you can't write one in 30 seconds. It's optional. 0 seconds.
  4. List your jobs — most recent first. Three bullets per job, action verb + outcome. 2-3 minutes.
  5. Education and skills. Two lines for education. 8-12 skills grouped into 3 categories. 45 seconds.
  6. Download. One click. PDF on your machine. Done.

When simple is the wrong answer

Simple isn't always right. If you're applying to design, marketing, or front-end roles, a plain template might underrepresent you — visual judgment is part of the job, and a dull resume sends the wrong signal. For those, look at our more expressive templates: Atelier, Studio, Aurora, or Quill.

But for tech, finance, consulting, ops, legal, healthcare, academia, government, and most engineering roles — simple wins. A clean Vellum resume is never the reason you don't get a callback.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a resume builder 'simple'?

For Free Resume Builder, simple means: open the page, the builder is right there, type your details, click Download. No onboarding tour, no AI questionnaire, no template carousel hiding the editor. The whole job is done in 5 minutes.

I don't want fancy. I want plain. Is this for me?

Yes. Three of our templates — Vellum, Ledger, and Compass — are deliberately plain. Single-column, no decoration, recruiter-friendly typography. They look like the kind of resume your law firm or McKinsey hiring manager wants to see.

Do I have to use AI to write my resume here?

No. There is no AI suggestion box, no GPT-powered bullet generator, no 'improve this' button. The builder is a typewriter — you bring the words. If you want AI help, paste the result into our text fields when you're done.

What's the simplest possible resume format I can build?

Pick the Vellum template. Fill in: contact, one-line summary, work experience, education, skills. Skip every optional section. Hit download. That's a resume that will pass any ATS and read clean to any recruiter.

Why are most resume builders so cluttered?

Because more features = more upsell opportunities. AI assistant (premium). Cover letter generator (premium). LinkedIn import (premium). We refuse all of that. The builder does one thing: turn your text into a clean PDF.

Can I make a resume in under 5 minutes?

Yes — that's the entire design goal. Pick a template (15s), fill in details (3-4 min), download (1s). The interface is structured so the most common action — type text — is always one click away.
