Why the PDF matters more than the editor
Your resume editor is where you spend ten minutes. Your PDF is what a recruiter actually opens. If the PDF is bad — pixelated text, weird page breaks, an ugly watermark — none of the editor polish matters.
Most "free" resume builders treat the PDF as the upsell. The editor is free; the download is paid. Or the download has a watermark across the page that requires a $9.99/month subscription to remove. We refuse to do that.
What's in the PDF you download
- Vector text, not raster. Every letter is real text, selectable, copyable, ATS-readable. Recruiters can paste your name into their tools.
- A4 or US Letter. Pick once in the builder; the PDF generates to spec. Margins and page breaks are tuned per-size.
- No watermark. No banner, no diagonal stamp, no footer reading "made with X." The PDF is yours.
- Embedded fonts. The typography you saw in the preview is the typography in the PDF. No fallback to Times New Roman on the recruiter's machine.
- Print-ready. Open in any PDF reader, send to any printer, sharp at any zoom level.
How to download a free PDF resume

Why our PDFs are smaller than competitors'
A typical resume PDF from a paid builder weighs 2-4 MB because it embeds raster images and bloated fonts. Ours are usually 80-200 KB because we use proper vector typography and don't embed marketing junk. Smaller files upload faster to ATS forms, email cleaner, and don't get rejected by attachment size limits.
The technical reason this is free
Free Resume Builder is a static site. There's no server crunching your PDF on a $400/month AWS instance. The PDF is rendered in your browser, on your machine, by your CPU. We pay for CDN bandwidth and a domain — that's it. So we have no reason to paywall the download. We literally don't pay per export.
Common PDF gotchas (and how we handle them)
| Issue | How we handle it |
|---|---|
| Page breaks splitting a job entry | Block-level keep-together — entries don't split mid-bullet. |
| Long URLs overflowing the page | URLs hyphenate at safe break points; never overflow margins. |
| Bullet points wrapping awkwardly | Hanging indent — wrapped lines align under the first character of the bullet text, not the bullet symbol. |
| Special characters (em-dash, accents, ñ) | Unicode-aware embedded fonts — they render correctly on any reader. |
| Header/footer collisions on page 2 | Auto-detected and adjusted — page 2+ stays clean. |
Frequently asked questions
Is the PDF download really free?
Yes. Free Resume Builder downloads PDFs free, unlimited, with no watermark. There's no daily limit, no "first download free, then upgrade." The PDF you get is identical to the on-screen preview.
What size is the PDF?
You choose A4 (most of the world) or US Letter. The PDF is generated to spec for the size you pick — margins, page breaks, and font scaling are tuned for each.
Is the PDF ATS-friendly?
Yes. The PDFs use selectable, parseable text (not images of text). Recruiter ATS tools like Greenhouse, Workday, Lever, Taleo, and iCIMS read them correctly. Stick to Vellum, Ledger, or Compass for the most conservative pipelines.
How is the PDF generated?
In your browser, using react-pdf. Nothing is uploaded. The download arrives within a second or two of clicking 'Download.'
Will the PDF look exactly like the preview?
Yes — pixel-perfect. The preview is rendered with the same engine as the export, so what you see is what you ship.
Can I print the PDF?
Of course. The PDFs are vector-based — they print sharp at any size on any printer. You can also press Cmd/Ctrl+P inside the builder for a direct print without saving the PDF first.
